FAWL Journal Guidelines

Purpose: The purpose of the Florida Association for Women Lawyer’s (FAWL) Journal is to educate, inform, advocate, and promote dialogue and reform regarding gender equality and leadership in the legal profession, judiciary, and community at large.

Topic: In order to be considered for publication, the topic should be consistent with the current issue theme, FAWL’s mission, be non-partisan and non-promotional, and original or timely. While criticism is welcome, it should be constructive, pose reform, and should be limited to issues as opposed to people.

Format Requirements: Articles must meet the following technical format requirements:

  • Microsoft Word
  • 1-2 pages in length (500-800 words = 1 page / 1000-1500 words = 2 pages)
  • Times New Roman, size 12 font
  • Single spaced, and 1-inch margins
  • Hard return between paragraphs
  • Bluebook citations as endnotes
  • Pictures/photos must be no less than 300 DPI

Submission: Submissions should be sent to the Journal Editor, and contain the following:

  • Article consistent with the requirements above
  • Author Headshot attached as a jpg file, separate from the word document
  • Any photographs to be included, sent as a separate jpg file, not incorporated into article
  • Short bio or resume of author (1-2 sentences)
  • Contact information (email, phone)

Selection Process: The FAWL Journal is printed twice per year, and submissions will be accepted on a continual basis. The FAWL Journal committee will review all submissions to ensure compliance with all substantive and technical requirements, and determine which articles best fit the current Journal theme or are the most relevant to FAWL’s mission. If selected to be placed in the Article Bank, the author will be notified of submission. The following will be taken into consideration during the selection process:

  • Originality; significance; practicality
  • Analysis; organization
  • Proper legal writing and citations; amount of editing needed
  • Length and space availability in upcoming issue

Publication Agreement: If the submitted article is chosen to be placed in the Articles Bank, the author acknowledges and agrees that FAWL has the right to use, or not use, the article in future publications, in FAWL’s sole and absolute discretion. If selected, the editor shall notify the author before the article is scheduled to be published with practical period of notice. The author agrees that the FAWL editor can make changes to the submitted article to best fit the journal's allotted space and substance. The author agrees to notify FAWL if the author has submitted the article to a third party publication, and shall notify the FAWL editor immediately if the article has been selected for publication by a the third party. The author agrees that if FAWL has notified the author of FAWL’s intent to publish, the author may not authorize a third party publication to publish the article prior to the FAWL Journal’s release. Any future reprint of the article by a third party shall be authorized in writing by FAWL’s Journal Editor, and include proper credits to the FAWL issue where it first appeared.
